Michelin – Eating Out in Pubs 2018

‘Recommendations to more than 590 British and Irish pubs and inns are found in MICHELIN Eating Out in Pubs. Trained, anonymous Michelin inspectors choose establishments ranging from country inns to urban gastropubs based on the quality of their food. The guide includes in-depth descriptions, colour photos and each pub’s typical 3-course meal, as well as listings of speciality beers and real ales. Some pubs even offer unique places to stay. This is the guide for finding quality food in an informal setting. To make your stay memorable, the MICHELIN guide has an easy-to-use format, featuring: * Thematic indexes to help you make the right choice * Cultural and practical information * Cuisines from around the world, in all price bands * City map locating the guide’s hotels and restaurants * Photos and lively description for each entry, including prices’.

The goal of a Michelin Guide, regardless of which part of the world it is covering, is always the same and that is to help its readers to find the best places to eat and stay on their travels. The famous Michelin Inspectors apply the same criteria for judging the establishments that they visit so there is a consistency that can be relied upon in the awards that they give, wherever that establishment may be. An entry into a Michelin Guide is a guarantee of quality and comfort and to make it into a guide and in particular to be awarded a much- coveted Michelin Star is something that can have a major impact on the success of a restaurant.
The guides, just like the hospitality industry, are very dynamic with new entries and deletions to and from their pages each year and the 2019 Michelin Guide to Great Britain and Ireland is no exception as it includes 21 new one-star restaurants and three new two-star. It is an indispensable source of information guiding you to establishments of true quality. They are updated annually and each entry in them is there because they have earned a place and not paid to be in it from a promotional point of view. Many people purchase an updated guide each year and any changes in terms of new awards and additions are summarised at the front of the book as well as any new entry being highlighted with the letter N, for new, in the colour red.

Michelin Stars have long been synonymous with the highest quality cuisine and establishment, with awards ranging from one star which is denoted as “High quality cooking worth a stop” up to three stars classified as “Exceptional cuisine, worth a special journey!”
However, there is far more to the Michelin Guides than just the listing of starred restaurants and within their pages you will find restaurants and hotels for all occasions and budgets but all with quality and comfort at their heart.

Two awards that you may not be quite so familiar with are the Bib Gourmand which is given to restaurants that provide good quality, good value cooking under £28 per person. Then finally there is the Michelin Plate which they award to restaurants for good cooking and where you can expect a good meal.

The guides are actually a wealth of information and there is a listing for each entry that includes all the practical information you would want to know such as cuisine type, an overview of the venue, the menu and cost. Additionally there are symbols referring to things such as parking, outside dining available, great view and so on. It is easy to refer back to the double page spread on how to use the guide and what each symbol means.
The 2019 Michelin Guide to Great Britain and Ireland is divided into 6 sections with London having a dedicated section, then the rest of England, Scotland, Wales, Northern Ireland and The Republic Of Ireland. Each section is then set out alphabetically according to the name of the town where an establishment is located. Maps also feature in each section showing where you can find the establishments.

London is divided into boroughs and the City of London and the maps which also show other places of interest and well known landmarks are extremely useful for planning where to eat if you are a visitor to London. So too are the details of the nearest Underground Station listed next to each entry for London.

In summary, the Michelin Guide is a must have resource for anyone wanting peace of mind that the restaurant or hotel they select from its pages will be of high quality and comfort which should help make for an enjoyable experience.
